Mall Madness

I have never been a big fan of shopping.  If i need something, i go in, get it, and get the hell out as soon as i can.  I don’t even like grocery shopping and tend to frequent the 24-hour stores in the wee morning hours, so as not to fight crowds and be able to saunter up and down aisles and spend 10 minutes pondering what flavors of yogurt i want without someone sighing loudly behind me waiting for me to move.

Here, i am surrounded by malls.  Even my hotel is part of the mall.  I understand why my Filipino colleagues wanted to go shopping all the time.  That’s where the life is–in the mall.  Even the grocery is in the mall.  There are two (SM and Rustan’s) very near to me, in opposite directions.  Rustan’s is a little pricier and has more name brands, but i prefer SM as it has more local fruits and a wider variety of other amenities besides food.  Plus, it has hypnotic powers that draw me to it.

The first time i ventured to Rustan’s on my own, i thought i would try to find it via the mall, instead of walking the one block outside.  I headed into the entrance a few doors down from the hotel, stopping in one of the central hubs to get my bearings.  Looking at the signs hanging from the ceiling.  I headed in the direction of Rustan’s, turning down one hall and then another.  After so many turns, i felt like i should have come back to where i started, but i wasn’t.  I had no idea where i was.  There were so many twists and turns.  As soon as you head down one corridor, you come to another shopping nucleus, spawning more tentacle paths, luring you into their depths.  It’s like a choose-your-own-shopping-adventure.

Somehow, i ended up at the SM, which was in the complete opposite direction of Rustan’s.  At least i was in a place i finally recognized.  I did my grocery shopping and found my way back by exiting the mall and returning via the outdoor sidewalks.

As much as i dislike shopping, i find myself calculating which days i’ll have enough time to get lost and wander around, exploring.  I’ve already discovered a Lush, which made me very excited.  The book stores are the only ones i’ve seen with multiple locations.  Everything else is different, and there are at least five malls in the area, all of which are connected by walkways.

One of these days, i’m going to see just how far away from the city i can get via malls.  I wonder if there’s a record for farthest, indoor distance traveled via malls?  Guinness, here i come!
