Up to My Neck in Lahar

On Saturday i visited the San Guillermo Church in Bacolor.  This is in the Pampanga province, about an hour drive outside of Manila.  In 1995, the entire town was covered in lahar flow from the 1991 Mt. Pinatubo eruption.

Lahar is basically volcanic goop that can harden into a cement-like material, but soften again when rained upon.  Currently, only half the church is visable as it’s been buried by the lahar.

I don’t know if the front doors used to be windows high up on the church facade, or if they carved out new doors, but it looks like they were probably windows, given the architechture around them.
You can see by the pictures what it looked like before and then now.  It’s nearly up to the rafters!   The altar was excavated and placed under the dome with several other statues that were restored.  Check out more pictures of this site.
